Currently I am a PhD candidate at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), as part of the NWO VIDI project Sublime Imperfections: Creative Interventions in post-1989 Europe. My dissertation addresses contemporary art practices in the post-Soviet space and is supervised by Prof. Dr. Ellen Rutten and Dr. Joost de Bloois. I take up imperfection both as (temporal) incompletion and in its connotations of waste, trash, and remnants in the art of the former USSR as it emerged after 1989 - as well as on the way it has come to be called ‘contemporary’. Artists and art collectives from e.g. Central Asia and the Caucasus, in whose work an intersection of current and historical socio-political issues revolving around the legacies of the Soviet Union (such as decolonization and nuclear waste) is at stake, have my special interest.
