  • Profile

Following graduation from the School of Design at the University of Kentucky, Katherine crossed the pond to the Netherlands to learn more about cities and experience a new culture. After obtaining her Masters in Urban Studies in 2015, she began her own company working as a consultant on projects concerning social processes within the built environment. This path has included working in a fair share of roles and a variety of different organizations, including non-profit, consultancy firm, local and provincial government and her current base: the University of Amsterdam.

Katherine's further expertise and interests include citizen participation, bridging the gap between bottom-up and top-down processes, social capital and networks, place branding and social innovation.

  • Research

In 2019 Katherine worked as a researcher in the JPI Urban Europe 'Bright Future for Black Towns' project. Currently she is working on the City LivEAbility by Redesign (CLEAR) project which aims to understand how city street experiments can trigger a transition towards less motorized transport within the urban mobility system.

  • Teaching & Supervision

    Recent teaching activities include:

    • Supervision of a group of bachelor theses ('Scriptieproject Sociale Geografie' (Thesis Project Human Geography) and 'Scriptieproject Planologie' ('Thesis Project Urban/Regional Planning').  During group seminars and one-on-one meetings, students develop and carry out their research plan.
    • Leading seminars for the first year bachelor course 'Geographies of Inequality'. Students were taught how to analyze the changing, multi-scalar geographical patterns of development, growth and decline, the spatial reproduction of social inequalities and strategies to mitigate or eliminate inequalities.
