  • Profile

Frenk van Harreveld is professor of social psychology and director of the Research Institute of Psychology at the University of Amsterdam. His chair is sponsored by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

In his research, he investigates the psychological determinants of perceptions and behaviour in the context of health, safety and sustainability. He specifically investigates the dynamic interplay of attitudinal, emotional and social factors as predictors of acceptance of sustainable products.

His research has two interrelated themes:

    1. Understanding behaviour through a complex systems approach towards attitudes.
    2. Psychological uncertainty (e.g. ambivalence, perceived risk, decisional conflict, control threats) and its affective, cognitive and behavioural consequences.

He investigates these topics in collaboration with partners such as RIVM, the Municipal Health Service (GGD), the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and the renewable and sustainable chemistry industry.
