Dealing with international diverse teams has become a core competence for leaders and managers. The influence of cultural differences should not to be underestimated.

For all who lead or participate in international teams UvA Academy developed this three day masterclass on how to address cultural differences and how to use those differences to the benefits of your team. During the program we provide solutions for the potential pitfalls of cooperation in internationally diverse teams.

This three day masterclass is hosted by the author of “The 7 Mental images of National Culture. Leading and Managing in a Globalized world”: Huib Wursten and Sjaak Pappe.

By participating in this program you will:

  • Learn how to address pitfalls in cooperation
  • Understand cultural differences: the underlying basic value dimensions and how they shape the mindset
  • Know how to bridge cultural differences in communication, in teams, in organizations
  • Learn how to deal with cultural differences in international negotiations
  • Acquire practical approaches and tools to deal with differences in international teams
  • Know how to structurally embed ways to improve cooperation in international teams

Programme

DAY 1 - Identifying key cultural differences

  • What is culture?
  • The difference between organizations on paper and in reality.
  • What is the difference between stereotyping and a research based description of the culture of a country?
Participants get the opportunity to “calculate” their individual cultural profile. By doing this the participants get a better understanding of the meaning of cultural values.

With the help of practical cases consequences will be described for making international teams work. Integrating people from different cultures and different professional backgrounds require an understanding of preferred leadership styles, management techniques, delegation styles, control techniques and communication styles.

DAY 2 Identifying key cultural differences part 2 & Step 2 - Briding the gap
How to create a win-win approach for international teams?

Interactive workshop about 7 mental images of National Culture.
The diversity in the world is not unlimited. Combining the Hofstede dimensions we can distinguish 6 culture clusters and one stand-alone culture. Each of the culture clusters includes a picture in the heads of people what organizations look like. This picture defines among other issues, what leadership looks like and how delegation is organized

DAY 3 - Integrate Differences & Anchoring solutions

  • The Negotiation Game. This game is design to provide a chance to apply the lessons learned about the mental images in a simulated and fun environment. It reveals that understanding cultural differences is not the same as using it in a real-life context.
  • Anchoring: Bridges to align people from different cultures should be supported by the organizational culture. But to be sure about this, it is important to “measure” the culture. We will conduct a Team Culture Scan through an online survey before the seminar which will reveal the actual culture and a classroom survey that shows which culture is preferred. We will do a case to determine the optimal culture, given the antional culture values, the actual culture and the preferred culture. Based on the gap analysis participants will have to choose priorities and after this get the change to select levers of change to close the gap.

This masterclass is based on the new book:

The 7 Mental images of National Culture.
Leading and Managing in a Globalized world.

The book describes the 7 cultural “rules of the game” in managing and leading international organizations. Affecting the way meetings are ran, how delegation is taking place, how decisions are made, how change can be managed, how customer service should be organized. In total 25 of these crucial issues are analyzed. The book includes cases/ exercises based on Huib Wurstens 30 years of experience working with different layers of international companies and organizations.
