Paulina Pietsch, student Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology

My name is Paulina, I am 25 years old and from Hamburg, Germany. Before studying, I worked as a communication manager at a creative agency.

Curious about people and there place in the world

I chose to study Cultural Anthropology because I am curious about people and why the world is the way it is. I felt that this field allowed me to explore diverse subjects such as history, politics, art, and philosophy: topics I enjoyed during my school years.

If you seek a deeper understanding of people and our world, anthropology is the perfect choice. What makes the Bachelor's programme truly special, however, is the people you'll meet: fellow students, professors, and UvA advisors, all of whom are kind, helpful, and open-minded.

Some things to think about

Amsterdam is undeniably an expensive city, and finding an apartment is no easy task, so advance planning is essential. Additionally, though I personally didn't undertake an internship, I strongly recommend it to establish a network for future career opportunities. Lastly, even if you're motivated, be aware that studying demands good planning.

Finding my passion

The final year of my studies proved to be the most enjoyable and inspiring, as it allowed me to focus on my greatest passions: visual and political anthropology. My thesis focused on the political dimensions of social media aesthetics. I loved the project since it allowed me to explore current, relevant issues.

I felt that I successfully investigated everyday phenomena such as ‘aesthetics’ on social media, as a vital area of anthropological investigation. This made me realize what I am most passionate about and good at. It was a beautiful and valuable insight to conclude my bachelor's degree and shape my forthcoming career path.
