Practical insights

Students value the in-depth knowledge and the direct applicability to their own professional practice.

For whom?

Healthcare professionals who want to deepen their knowledge of healthcare information systems, data storage and processing, and the once-only registration and multiple use of healthcare data. No programming experience is required; enthusiasm for digital solutions in healthcare is sufficient.

Admission requirements

You can enroll with a completed bachelor’s or master’s degree (HBO or WO level) and at least two years of professional work experience in healthcare.

Program

Every healthcare professional works with one or more healthcare information systems. Those who speak the language of ICT professionals and data scientists can use these systems and the healthcare data stored within them in a strategic way. This course outlines the landscape of different healthcare information systems and their interconnections, and introduces the basics of informatics and data standardization and exchange.

With the knowledge and skills gained in this course, you will be a strong discussion partner for information analysts, EHR developers, and system administrators. Together, you will be able to design information systems in a way that optimizes data registration and maximizes the (re)usability of the recorded data.

Topics

  • Healthcare information systems
  • Process analysis and redesign
  • Software as a medical device
  • Databases and networks
  • Data structures and information models
  • The FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability)
  • Interoperability standards such as terminologies (SNOMED, LOINC and ICD-11), information models, and exchange standards (including HL7 FHIR)
  • Legal implications and legislation (GDPR and EHDS)

Course Details

This course is offered entirely through e-learning. The study programme provides clear weekly deadlines to complete the course within 8 weeks, but you also have the option to progress at your own pace, either faster or slower. In addition, you will work on assignments both individually and in groups with fixed deadlines.

Assessment consists of a written assignment and an exam. The exam is administered online, with an option for students to take it onsite at Amsterdam UMC (AMC location) upon request.

The course materials and assignments can be followed in either Dutch or English. Most of the literature is in English.

What will participants learn?

  • Discover which healthcare information systems are used across different healthcare domains.
  • Develop basic skills in managing and extracting data from healthcare information systems, and explore the difference between spreadsheets and databases through practical exercises.
  • Understand the meaning and implementation of the FAIR principles.
  • Gain insight into legislation on data protection and data reuse (GDPR/AVG and EHDS).
  • Problem-oriented medical record
  • HL7 messaging
  • Structural standards such as OMOP CDM, OpenEHR, and HL7 FHIR
  • Terminology standards such as ICD, ICPC, LOINC, and SNOMED CT
