Childhood trauma does not arise only from what goes wrong, but also from what is missing. A lack of safety, attention or predictability can have just as much impact as an excess of stress or insecurity. In this lecture, psychiatrist and Professor of Stress and Resilience Christiaan Vinkers shows how such early experiences are related to health in later life. This also applies to bullying, a form of social stress that can have lasting effects on self‑image, the stress system and relationships.

Vinkers explores the question of why one person develops long‑term symptoms while another remains more resilient. Drawing on scientific research and clinical experience, he outlines how patterns emerge and why they often only become visible later in life. The lecture offers a framework for better understanding and contextualising behaviour and symptoms, and underlines the importance of early detection and support. Without simple solutions, but with an awareness of complexity and of the potential for change.
