Three research schools of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), or in which the UvA actively participates, will each receive €800,000 from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to train young researchers.

The research schools are:

  • the Gravitation and Astroparticle Physics Amsterdam (GRAPPA), an UvA centre of excellence and one of the University’s research priority areas;
  • the Holland Research School of Molecular Chemistry (HRSMC), for which the UvA is the lead organisation;
  • the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT), in which the UvA participates.

This financial boost will enable the research schools to each appoint four PhD students, thus allowing inexperienced but talented researchers to develop their own ideas. A total of 28 graduate schools applied for a grant, and thirteen applications were accepted.

Graduate Programme

The funding is part of the NWO’s Graduate Programme and promotes the development of the Dutch PhD programmes. Local and national research schools and Graduate Schools can apply for funding via the NWO’s Graduate Programme.
