The Dutch universities performed well in this year’s THE ranking. The Netherlands continues to rank third among countries with universities in the top 200, a group traditionally dominated by American and British universities. The California Institute of Technology came in first for the second year running.

Methodology

The THE ranking is one of several international rankings, each with their own methods for assessing universities. In the case of the THE, the ranking is based on 13 distinct performance indicators, divided in five broad categories: teaching (30%), citation impact score (30%), research (30%), ‘international outlook’ in respect of staff, students and research (7.5%) and contract research funding (2.5%).

THE and QS

This is the second year that the THE has conducted its own ranking, previously publishing these scores in coordination with the QS in the THE - QS World University Ranking. In the 2012 QS World Rankings released recently the UvA tops the list of Dutch universities, placing 62nd.
