Artificial intelligence is reshaping higher education. It offers exciting opportunities but also brings challenges that can feel overwhelming for educators. Luuk Terbeek, project leader of AIMES: “Educators often feel uncertain about how to approach AI in education. Which is understandable. But to prepare students for a future where AI is everywhere, educators need the skills to use these technologies responsibly. And that’s why we created this tool.”
AIMES provides structured, practical guidance to help educators feel confident, no matter their current understanding of AI. It encourages reflection and stimulates a shared narrative among users, helping teams align their strategies while promoting the responsible integration of AI into education.
Erdinç Saçan, teacher and researcher at Fontys University of Applied Sciences: “To make our teaching AI-proof, teachers need training and access to AI tools and support. AIMES facilitates this with its self-assessments and useful resources and tips to improve your AI literacy.”
AIMES includes three tailored surveys for teachers, programme directors, and faculty board members. Each survey takes just 5–10 minutes to complete and offers:
Actionable insights
You receive instant feedback after completing the survey, including personalized tips, tailored resources to enhance your AI skills, and a downloadable report with practical guidance you can reference anytime.
Open Educational Resource
Institutions worldwide can access AIMES to adapt its content to their unique needs.
Professional development integration
AIMES can complement formal training programmes such as University Teaching Qualifications and educational leadership courses.
Support for strategic planning
Institutions can use AIMES as a reference to align AI initiatives with their vision and policies.
AIMES is built on the EU’s Key Requirements for Trustworthy AI (EU, 2019), prioritizing transparency, privacy, and societal well-being. To stay up to date, the tool is updated twice a year, reflecting the latest developments in AI and education. AIMES is developed through collaboration with an international expert panel and contains numerous references, including recent reports from UNESCO and OECD. Furthermore, in June 2025 a student survey will be added.
Prof. Dr. Emrah Cinkara from Gaziantep University concludes: “I am confident that the Open Educational Resource version of AIMES offers institutions worldwide an opportunity to democratize AI literacy. By making AI education accessible to scholars everywhere, AIMES empowers institutions to bridge the gap between emerging technologies and the skills we need to navigate our increasingly AI-driven world”.
