Starting 1 September, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) will make its own AI chat tool, UvA AI Chat, available for use. This generative AI (GenAI) tool is comparable to commercial tools like ChatGPT but has been specifically designed to meet the university’s standards for safe and responsible use.

Responsible use

UvA AI Chat was developed to allow students and staff to safely experiment with the possibilities of GenAI in education. Unlike commercial tools, any data shared within this chat remains within the technical infrastructure of the UvA. This data will not be shared with external parties without the explicit consent of both the UvA and the user.

Clear guidelines – not everything is permitted

UvA AI Chat offers new possibilities but also raises questions about how students should use it responsibly. The UvA has established clear guidelines for this. Read more about these AI guidelines for students.

Focus on AI literacy

With this tool, the UvA aims to contribute to the development of AI literacy within the academic community. UvA AI Chat provides a safe foundation for experimenting with GenAI. Each study programme can decide for itself whether and how to further integrate AI into education. Lecturers now have a safe tool at their disposal to explore how GenAI can enrich their teaching.

National collaboration

In developing UvA AI Chat, the UvA worked closely with SURF and Npuls. As part of this collaboration, a new platform was created, EduGenAI, through which Institutions from secondary vocational education, universities of applied sciences and research universities are exploring whether a nationwide GenAI system for education can be built.

Why the UvA developed its own AI chat

AI is evolving rapidly and its use at the UvA is increasing too, which comes with various risks and raises various questions. The UvA has chosen not to ignore these developments but to guide them. By offering its own AI tool, the university is taking the lead in shaping how this technology can be used in education. The UvA is the first university in the Netherlands to provide a self-developed GenAI tool at this scale.

Besides seeing the risks, we also see the opportunities GenAI brings. With UvA AI Chat, we are anticipating these developments. We want to teach students how to use GenAI responsibly in their studies and in their future careers.

Finally, the development of UvA AI Chat is a first step towards integrating GenAI into education. We will continue to develop the tool, while also evaluating to what extent GenAI should be deployed in our teaching.
