At the University of Amsterdam (UvA), we aim to use Generative AI (GenAI) responsibly to enrich our education, research, and operations. On this page, you can read about the steps we are taking to implement GenAI in a responsible way.

1. We are building a secure, independent, and scalable AI infrastructure

A dedicated ICTS team is currently developing an in-house AI environment for the UvA: the UvA AI Chat. This tool is similar to ChatGPT, but is fully managed by the UvA and specifically tailored to meet our own needs. As a result, all input remains under UvA control, we reduce our dependence on Big Tech, and we can adapt the tool as needed. We expect it to be available for everyone in education by the start of the 2025–2026 academic year.

2. We encourage responsible use of AI

AI is already being used in many areas, often without awareness of the associated risks or drawbacks. That’s why the UvA is developing an AI literacy programme to help staff and students use AI consciously and competently. We are also exploring the potential for a broader AI awareness campaign and are offering AI training sessions and e-learnings.

3. We keep our AI policy up to date

The UvA continuously updates its policies to integrate (Gen)AI in a responsible way. We ensure our policies align with current Dutch and European regulations (such as the GDPR and the upcoming AI Act). We also set ethical guidelines and investigate how AI can be used in a privacy-friendly manner. We do this in collaboration with other universities through the Npuls initiative, UNL, and the LUNAI network.

4. We are running pilots to explore AI’s added value in education

Through hackathons, pilots supported by Teaching & Learning Centres, events, and applied research, we are exploring how to optimally use GenAI in education - what works and what doesn’t? The gained insights help to shape our policies and further initiatives.

Phased rollout

Integrating GenAI is a major transition, which is why the UvA is choosing a phased approach. The initial focus will be on education in 2025, followed by a broader, integrated programme that also includes research and operations.

With this programme, the UvA aims to use GenAI responsibly, enabling education and research to fully benefit from the opportunities it offers.
