Dr A.P. Bos (1949) has been named Professor of Acute Paediatrics and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).

Bert Bos's work in paediatric intensive care has focused on the effects on children following life-threatening illnesses and the necessary but often aggressive treatment methods. This has led to the development of research into conditions that lead to acute, life-threatening lung diseases. This line of research is particularly translational, constantly looking for relevance to the sick child. It has led to a number of publications in leading journals covering intensive care.

Bos was also one of the initiators of research into the long-term effects of intensive care on children. This led to the development of an outpatients' clinic carrying out follow-up research into the medical and psychological effects that hospitalisation with a life-threatening illness has on children, and on their parents and family members.

Through his interest in medical ethical problems, Bos has contributed significantly to the development of a project aimed at increasing the quality of end-of-life decision-making and communication around the hospitalisation of seriously ill children.

Since 2000, Bos has been head of the Department of Paediatric Intensive Care and deputy instructor in Paediatrics at the Emma Children's Hospital at the Amsterdam Medical Centre (AMC). Prior to this, he was head of Department of Paediatric Intensive Care at the Beatrix Children's Clinic at the University Medical Centre Groningen. Bos is actively involved in the implementation of the updated paediatric training programme delivered within the AMC's education and training region. He has published in a range of national and international scientific journals, including The Lancet, Critical Care Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine.
