Liesbeth Zegveld specialises in legal redress for war victims. Her research centres around international humanitarian law (law of war), with a special focus on reparations for war victims. She will be establishing a Center for War Reparations at the UvA. 

From 2000 onwards, Zegveld has worked as a lawyer at the Böhler Advocaten law firm, where she has been a partner since 2005. As head of Böhler's International Law & Human Rights department, she has worked on many major cases such as the Srebrenica victims’ lawsuit and the case filed by Indonesian widows whose husbands were executed by Dutch soldiers during the police actions. She also represented the victims of nerve gas attacks in the lawsuit against Dutch businessman Frans van Anraat, who was later sentenced for selling chemicals to Iraq. She also serves as legal counsel for the Nuhanovic Foundation, which works to support war victims (www.nuhanovicfoundation.org). 

Between 2006 and 2013, Zegveld served as professor of International Humanitarian Law, with a special focus on the Rights of Women and Children, at Leiden University. Zegveld also holds various advisory positions. For example, she serves as a member of the International Law Association’s Committee for Reparation for War Victims and the Advisory Board of The Rights Forum, an NGO committed to ethical Middle East policies. In 2011, she received the Clara Meijer-Wichmannpenning Award in recognition of her dedication to human rights.
