As an academic specialising in sign language, Beppie van den Bogaerde has conducted much research into bimodal bilingualism and into the simultaneous acquisition of Dutch and Sign Language of the Netherlands (SLN) by hearing and deaf children of deaf parents. Furthermore, she studies the Dutch Deaf community from a range of perspectives, such as participation in sports by deaf children and communication between deaf and hard-of-hearing patients and hearing care providers. In the area of teaching SLN as a second language, she has worked with a national academic team on making the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) fit for signed languages. For the higher language levels (C1 and C2), this CEFR for signed languages is currently being specifically elaborated with language profiles for teachers and interpreters of sign language in higher education in Pro-Sign, which is an international project of the European Centre for Modern Languages.

In the years ahead, Van den Bogaerde's research will focus on further describing SLN. This knowledge is vital for both first and second-language acquisition research at the UvA. Moreover, it extends the foundation for the practice-based research that Van den Bogaerde conducts at the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (HU).

Since September 2007, Van den Bogaerde has been professor (lector) of Deaf Studies at the HU's Education Knowledge Centre. From 2002 to 2006, she worked at the department of Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Van den Bogaerde is a member of the board of the Dutch Association for Applied Linguistics (Anéla). She is also co-editor of the international journals Dutch Journal of Applied Linguistics (DuJAL) and Language, Interaction and Acquisition (LIA). Beppie van den Bogaerde has published two books on sign language and has authored many articles for national and international journals.
