Jasper Stokman conducts research into Lie theory, named after the Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie (1842-1899).Originally, Lie theory is the study of continuous symmetries. Recent developments in mathematics and theoretical physics have resulted in new algebraic structures that can be placed in a Lie theoretical context, including quantum groups and double affine Hecke algebras. Stokman's research focuses on the mathematical analysis of such new symmetry structures and on the development of their mathematical applications, for instance in the area of harmonic analysis and special functions. A special focus area in his research is the interface with mathematical physics, including the analysis of exactly solvable models in statistical physics using Lie theoretical techniques.

Stokman has been affiliated with the UvA since 2005; since 2007 as associate professor of Mathematics. He was previously a fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) working at the UvA. Stokman is also professor by special appointment of Integrable Systems and Lie Theory at Radboud University Nijmegen. He has received various research grants, including a Vidi grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
