An important part of Antoine van Kampen's research focuses on systems genomics and systems medicine, in which the bioinformatics analysis and interpretation of large and complex measurement data from experimental technologies such as next generation sequencing play a large role.

As a professor, he will be focusing on mathematically modelling immunological processes, in order to gain greater insight into the role of these processes in immune disorders and autoimmune diseases.

Alongside his research, Van Kampen provides education in the field of bioinformatics/systems biology/omics at the AMC Graduate School, Biomedical Sciences (UvA), Computational Science (UvA), Bioinformatics (VU Amsterdam) and Systems Biology (VU Amsterdam).

From 2007 to 2017, Van Kampen was a professor by special appointment in Medical Bioinformatics at the UvA's Faculty of Science. He has been an associate professor at the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA) since 2006, as well as the group leader of the AMC-UvA's Bioinformatics Laboratory, which he started in 1997. From 2006 until 2010, he was the scientific director of the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC).
