Traditionally, the study of Polarization, Segregation, and Inequality (PSI) has been siloed, lacking a comprehensive understanding of their interconnectedness. Our Research Priority Area (RPA) aims to bridge this gap by bringing together interdisciplinary methodologies and collaboration among various research groups as well as societally driven research at Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
DIEP@UvA and its focus area FAEME on understanding the foundations of emergence, the COMPASS initiative on school segregation, and the recently created FMG focus area on Polarization, among others, are an integral part of this RPA and are embedded in an established culture of scientific exchange at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS).
Our primary goal is to develop a mathematical and computational toolbox suitable for, but not limited to, the study of PSI, as well as a computational model of an artificial society exhibiting PSI that can be constrained with available data from the CBS, the municipality of Amsterdam and other sources. This model will be used to test and design interventions aimed at reducing current levels of PSI. The engagement with policy makers on this topic via the POLDER Simulation Centre led by IAS, can support an evidence-based policy making process.
Our research aligns with the European Union's Destination Earth programme, offering potential synergies with climate models to understand the interaction between natural phenomena and societal development.
Ultimately, our efforts seek to develop a monitoring tool to gauge critical levels of societal disintegration, empowering policymakers to address emergent challenges effectively. By deepening our understanding of PSI, we aspire to foster a more equitable and just society through informed policies and interventions.
