On 1 September 2025, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) made its own AI chat tool available for use: UvA AI Chat. This application is similar to ChatGPT but is fully self-managed and specifically designed for students, lecturers, and staff at the UvA. With this, the UvA takes an important step toward the safe, ethical, and future-proof use of artificial intelligence in education, research, and operations.

For UvA staff, more information about UvA AI Chat is available via the staff website.

More information about UvA AI Chat, privacy and Responsible use of AI is available on a dedicated page.

Why do we develop UvA AI Chat?

1. Privacy and security

All input remains within the UvA. There is no permanent data sharing with commercial foreign parties, and all user queries are processed anonymously.

2. Control over data

The UvA retains digital sovereignty. We determine how data is stored, processed, and protected.

3. Accessible and tailored

The UvA AI Chat is designed for ease of use within the UvA context. The system can be adapted to specific needs, such as supporting the development of teaching materials. Support from within the UvA is available.

4. Sovereign and future-proof

While we do not control how the underlying language model is trained, we do have control over important elements such as filtering, allowed questions, and the system prompt. This allows us to move toward technical sovereignty and potentially connect to ethically responsible models such as GPT-NL or EuroLLM in the future.

5. Support for academic freedom

By managing the front end of the AI system ourselves, the UvA ensures that the use of AI does not lead to censorship or external influence.
