UvA Pride

UvA Pride is a visible, accessible and inclusive community that creates a safer space for LGBTQIA+ people and allies across the University of Amsterdam.

Through social events, meaningful connections and support for queer research, we strengthen community and wellbeing. We connect people and initiatives within and beyond the UvA, and bring together students, staff, academics and leadership in a shared effort to make the university a place where everyone can belong, contribute and thrive.

What can UvA Pride offer you?

  1. Events – We regularly organise lectures, social gatherings, and other activities such as Pride University. Have an idea? Contact us!
  2. Research Network – This network connects UvA academics researching LGBTQIA+ topics across all disciplines, and annually takes part in the LGBTQIA+ Research Day.
  3. Spotlight – The student group within UvA Pride focused on activities for students.
  4. Policy Advice – We believe it is important to engage in policy making, so that policies are more inclusive for LGBTQIA+ students and staff.

Spotlight

Spotlight is the queer student association operating with UvA Pride and open to all students in Amsterdam. Their ongoing projects include the gender-affirming clothing campaign GenderSwap, the informational campaign ENGAGE!, and the Queer Cinephile Society. They also regularly organise social and cultural events for queer community building.

Remembrance Day, 4 May

Every year on 4 May, we lay a wreath at the Homomonument near the Westerkerk, together with the Pride organisations of Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Inholland University of Applied Sciences, and ROC Amsterdam. At this moment, we remember all the LGBTQIA+ people who were persecuted for who they were.

Lectures

Throughout the year, we organise substantive events that make LGBTQIA+ topics accessible to a wide audience from various perspectives.

Amsterdam Pride Boat

Together with other educational institutions in Amsterdam, we organise a boat for the Canal Parade to show that at UvA, you can be who you are. We want to celebrate our staff and students with this initiative. Before the boat trip, we participate in the Pride Walk to show that Pride is a protest and that the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community are still not adequately protected.
