Prof. Marieke de Goede has been University Professor of Politics of Security Cultures since 1 May 2026.

About the chair

From digital surveillance to sanctions and financial flows: increasingly, societal issues are being approached as security matters. This securitisation has major consequences for policy, democratic control and the way states and institutions intervene in society.

De Goede investigates how these processes emerge and the role of technology and infrastructures play in them. She focuses, among other things, on data-driven warfare, the relationship between security and international political economy, the role of financial flows in security policy, and the historical intertwining of finance, security and the state.

De Goede's research project into the enduring impact of colonial histories on contemporary financial infrastructures, for which she received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council in 2025, aligns seamlessly with her new chair.

An important task for De Goede as a university professor is connecting disciplines and networks, and developing integrated perspectives on resilience, security, conflict and peace, both within the university and beyond.
