Booking the Aula

The place that lends itself to academic theater

Long before the UvA leased the Old Lutheran Church as its Aula in 1961, the building already hosted inaugural lectures, lustrum celebrations and PhD defence ceremonies. That role is still very much alive: in addition to formal ceremonies, the Aula can today be booked for degree ceremonies, conferences, lectures and other UvA events.

  • Events: up to 500 seats
  • Receptions: up to 250 guests

Requesting a booking

If you would like to book the Aula for an event, please submit your reservation request via the form. If you require support during your event, please contact the Conferences & Events team at the Communications Office via congres@uva.nl once your booking has been confirmed.

Please note: completing this form does not constitute a final booking. Your reservation is only final once you have received confirmation from us by email. The Aula has very limited availability, as the venue is primarily used for academic ceremonies, large degree ceremonies and lectures.

  • Terms and conditions

    As a rule, events are scientific or socio-cultural in nature and may not conflict with the objectives of the University of Amsterdam.

    Technical support, security and cleaning are arranged by staff members of the Aula and subsequently charged to the applicant. Invoicing is via a WBS element or cost centre. Use of the cloakroom is compulsory and must be requested via uva249.nl@cirfood.com.

  • Facilities

    Audiovisual

    The Aula uses its own technicians, and you are therefore required to hire them when booking the Aula. The venue has its own audiovisual facilities, which are at your disposal during your event. If you wish, you can make an appointment with the technician well before the event via av-aula@uva.nl to test the equipment.

    The following audiovisual equipment is included in the hire of the Aula:

    • Lectern microphone
    • Two handheld microphones
    • Two headset microphones
    • Basic standard lighting (one setting with fixed spotlights)
    • Projection screen and LCD screens
    • Projector
    • Laptop connection
    • Induction loop for the hearing impaired
    • Brio webcam to support Zoom/MS Teams
    • Livestreaming facilities
    • Wi-Fi
    • Furniture

    The Aula also offers the following facilities, which can be used free of charge:

    • Two standing tables
    • Six bar stools
    • Panel table including chairs
    • Two mobile counters
    • Side table
    • Catering and cloakroom

    For catering during a welcom, break or drinks reception, please contact Cirfood at uva249.nl@cirfood.com. Use of the cloakroom is compulsory and can be arranged via Cirfood.

  • Accessibility

    At the UvA, we believe it is important that everyone feels welcome and at ease. Whether you are organising or attending an event, we aim to provide an inclusive venue where everyone can feel at home and participate fully.

    The UvA offers support for visitors who are hard of hearing by means of a hearing loop system.
    The Aula is accessible for wheelchair users. We kindly ask you to let us know in advance if you will be coming in a wheelchair, so that we can open the entrance doors for you beforehand.
    If you would like to use a lactation room, please let us know in advance.

  • Rates and invoicing

    Each year in January, our rates are increased by a percentage in line with market conditions. View the current price lists (in Dutch).

    Aula rates

    The rate is €500 per session.
    A session is either morning (9:00–13:00), afternoon (14:00–18:00) or evening (19:00–23:00).

    The total costs depend on various factors, such as the number of visitors and the level of security and technical support required. We can only provide an estimate once we have received, among other things, a schedule and the booking has been confirmed.

    Technical support, security and cleaning are charged retrospectively via a UvA cost centre or WBS element.

    Please note: no room hire is charged for graduation ceremonies.
