In a world where ecosystems are increasingly under pressure, scientists are searching for new answers. In this lecture, Harm van der Geest takes you to the IJsselmeer region – once a rich, dynamic delta, now a heavily regulated landscape with declining biodiversity.

With examples such as the Marker Wadden and the research vessel RV Dreissena – co-funded by the Amsterdam University Fund – Van der Geest shows how novel ecosystems are being used to create new nature where restoration is no longer possible. Discover how science, students and innovative approaches come together to give biodiversity a new chance in a permanently altered landscape.

Speakers

Harm van der Geest

Aquatic ecologist Harm van der Geest (UvA-IBED), together with Arie Vonk, leads a multidisciplinary research programme on the ecology of Lake Markermeer. With their research vessel RV Dreissena, they and their students map the ecological dynamics and investigate how new nature can emerge in this human-made aquatic system.
