What happens behind the scenes of digital attacks? How do these operations relate to international humanitarian law? And to what extent can existing legal rules withstand these new forms of conflict?
Brigadier General Prof. Dr Paul Ducheine is a military lawyer and works at the NATO Defence College. At the Netherlands Defence Academy, he was Professor of Cyber Warfare (2015–2025) and Chair of the Department of Military Sciences. He obtained his doctorate at the Faculty of Law of the UvA, where he also held the Special Chair in Law of Military Cyber Operations (2014–2024), and he is an Associate Research Fellow at the Amsterdam Centre for International Law.
Sarah Bronkhorst is an American-Dutch journalist for De Groene Amsterdammer and Het Financieele Dagblad. She previously studied PPLE at the UvA and was an interviewer at Room for Discussion.
