From their first encounter at the University of Amsterdam in 1997 to conversations today about history, science, politics and (poly)identity: how does multiperspectivity help us to better understand what is happening in a time of polarisation and rapid change, in the Netherlands but also worldwide?
Drawing on personal experiences, academic research and current societal issues, they explore why curiosity, historical awareness and the ability to place multiple perspectives side by side and critically examine them are more important than ever.
Speakers
Gunay Uslu is a cultural historian, entrepreneur and former State Secretary for Culture and Media. She obtained her PhD at the University of Amsterdam, where she also worked as a lecturer. Uslu was co‑founder of Corendon, where she now serves as CEO. In addition, she holds various supervisory positions in the cultural sector and the public domain.
Frank van Vree is Professor Emeritus of the History of War, Conflict and Memory at the University of Amsterdam. From 2016 to 2021 he was Director of NIOD and previously Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on war, violence and cultures of remembrance in the twentieth century. As NIOD Director, he led the major research project on Indonesia that contributed to the Dutch government’s decision to offer an official apology. He has published numerous books and edited volumes and writes regularly for newspapers and magazines, particularly for De Groene Amsterdammer.
