The new academic year is starting in a world in which the international legal order and democratic values are under pressure. Internationally, due to events such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but also in the Netherlands, as a result of to growing inequality, disinformation and mistrust. How can the university contribute to a resilient democracy?

That is the question that will be central to the opening of the 2022-2023 academic year. You are cordially invited to attend the opening on Monday, 5 September in the University’s Aula, at Singel 411.

Programme

  • Executive Board President Geert ten Dam discusses the importance of science for a robust democratic society
  • University professor of Artificial intelligence and society Claes de Vreese talks about research into media, artificial intelligence and democracy
  • Musical intermezzo by members of the student choir Amsterdam
  • Professor of Media Studies Mark Deuze discusses media activism, democratic engagement and education
  • Working under the name of the Kiesmannen, UvA alumni Dylan and Jochem are on a mission to stimulate young people to become actively involved in our democracy. They will close the event with their view on democracy

Afterwards there will be a chance to carry on the conversation during informal drinks at the Maagdenhuis.
