Early 2010 will see the first phase of redevelopment work at the Roeterseiland complex, as construction begins at the former Diamantslijperij building on Nieuwe Achtergracht 170. The front and rear sections of the former factory building will be renovated, while the other sections of the complex will be demolished to make room for new construction. The facade on the Nieuwe Achtergracht will be preserved in its entirety due to the building's historical significance.

A construction site will be erected at the Valckenierstraat in January of 2010 to facilitate loading and unloading, storage and several site huts. The construction site will be cordoned off with fences. Actual construction is set to commence in early 2010.

The new building is expected to be completed in 2011. The new Diamantslijperij complex will house the CREA foundation and the UvA student associations' student activity centre.

Second phase: buildings B and C

In the autumn of 2010 the second phase of redevelopment work at the Roeterseiland complex will commence, consisting of the renovation of Nieuwe Achtergracht 166 (buildings B and C). Detailed plans for this renovation are currently under preparation. The buildings will feature teaching rooms, office space and various facilities.

Those living in the vicinity of the Roeterseiland complex will be informed of the start of construction by means of the Roeterseiland Information Bulletin.
