According to the jury of the Dutch AI Award, Professor Max Welling is the person in the Netherlands who has made the most significant contribution to the AI ecosystem. He received the annual award during a gala in Hilversum on Wednesday 4 March.

Max Welling is a professor of machine learning at the University of Amsterdam, where he heads the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (AMLAB). He is also co-founder of the national Innovation Centre for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI).

The jury report

The jury report states: "His scientific publications are among the most cited in machine learning. Max also played a key role in the establishment of ELLIS, a leading European network for AI research. In this way, he strengthens Europe's position in a field that is often dominated by the US and China.  In addition to his academic work, Max Welling is co-founder of AI start-up CuspAI, where he translates fundamental algorithms into applications in science and industry. The jury sees Max Welling as a bridge builder. He combines fundamental innovation, international leadership, European strategic reinforcement and talent development. Or as one of the jury members remarked: ‘If only we had more Max Wellings in the Netherlands.’

Members of the expert jury

The nominees were assessed by an independent jury on their contribution to the Dutch AI ecosystem. The jury consists of:

  • Carlo van de Weijer is director of the Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute and an international keynote speaker on innovation.
  • Erdinç Saçan is a lecturer and researcher at Fontys ICT. He specialises in inclusive Artificial Intelligence and generative AI.
  • Kees Verhoeven is a former member of the Dutch House of Representatives with extensive knowledge of technology. He is also an author and independent consultant.
  • Monique van Dusseldorp is an event curator, speaker and moderator, known for events such as the NEXT Conference and Immersive Tech Week.
  • Saskia Vlaar is a board member at AIC4NL and holds several supervisory positions.

About the Dutch AI Award

The Dutch AI Award is an annual prize in the Netherlands that celebrates individuals, organisations and initiatives that make a special contribution to the AI ecosystem in the Netherlands, particularly in the field of development, application and social impact of Artificial Intelligence.
