Student assessor Henry de Vries represents students on the Digital Autonomy of Universities Committee (DAU). He is the only student representative on this national committee, which is working to strengthen the digital autonomy of Dutch universities.

Digital tools, services and infrastructure are indispensable to education, research and operations. At the same time, universities are increasingly dependent on a small number of large, often international technology companies. This can create risks for, among other things, control over data, privacy, knowledge security, affordability and academic freedom.

The DAU Committee brings together universities, SURF and the government to develop a shared vision and roadmap. In doing so, the committee looks at concrete steps, such as joint procurement terms, better legislation and regulation, developing alternatives and collaboration within the Netherlands and across Europe.

With Henry de Vries as the only student representative, the student perspective has a direct place in the committee. This is important, because students work and study every day with the digital systems the committee focuses on. Their experiences and interests are therefore essential when making choices about a digital infrastructure that aligns with public and academic values.
