Verbeek began his role as rector magnificus at the UvA on 1 October 2022; over the past six months he has also served as acting president of the UvA. ‘I found this a very difficult decision. I have truly grown to love the UvA, with all the knowledge and expertise we have here,’ Verbeek explained. ‘I have worked very closely with many people and have always been extremely well supported, which has been wonderful. After much deliberation, I decided to make this move to the KNAW; it has been a long-cherished ambition of mine and gives me the unique opportunity to serve as an ambassador for science. Outstanding scientists from across the Netherlands come together there as the voice and conscience of science, while at the same time it is a platform for engagement with society. I hope to make a valuable contribution to this bridging role between science and society.’
Jolande Sap, chair of the UvA Supervisory Board, said: ‘We deeply regret that Peter-Paul is stepping down as rector magnificus of our university. He has shown tremendous commitment to excellent education and research, and has contributed greatly to, among other things, our four strategic themes, the educational vision, the responsible use of AI and digital technology, and the development of the ethical framework for collaborations. Above all, Peter-Paul is a kind person and a wonderful colleague. At the same time, we are proud that he is taking on a fantastic new role in which he will represent science in a different way.’
Verbeek will step down as rector during the opening of the academic year on Monday, 31 August 2026. The UvA Supervisory Board will immediately begin the procedure to recruit a new rector.
