Dr F.J.M. Roeters (1954) has been named professor by special appointment of Adhesive Dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry (ACTA) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The chair was designated on behalf of Stichting Bijzondere Leerstoel Kuraray Dental (Kuraray Dental Special Chair Foundation).

Joost Roeters has long been active in the field of adhesive dentistry. Midway into the last century, advances in dentistry made it possible to bond to teeth, which was followed by the development of tooth-coloured fillings (composites) made from synthetic resins and of adhesives. A key advantage of this type of dentistry is that it reduces the need to drill away sound dental tissue in order to yield the necessary surface area, since now the filling can be bonded directly to the tooth. Moreover, bonding onto dental tissue serves to reinforce the tooth itself. Over the years, materials and techniques have evolved, and the applications of composites have grown apace. Today, composites play an important role in the treatment of teeth that have been damaged by cavities or wear and are also a good option for a wide range of tooth defects of a more aesthetic nature. Roeters is also interested in how the different filling methods used by dentists influence the lifespan of a restoration. Working in cooperation with various departments within ACTA, Roeters will focus his teaching and research activities on this area of dentistry. He will also play a coordinating role in strengthening cooperative teaching and research ties between ACTA and Radboud University Nijmegen.

Roeters has worked at Radboud University Nijmegen since 1978 in various positions, among which as University Lecturer in the departments of Paediatric Dentistry and Cariology and Endodontology. He obtained his PhD in 1992 with a thesis entitled The prediction of future caries prevalence in pre-school children. Since 2002 he has been senior university lecturer in Adhesive Dentistry in the department of Preventative and Curative Dentistry. Roeters is the main author of two books on the use of composites in aesthetic dentistry, with Hein de Kloet as second author. He has also published in a range of scholarly journals. In addition, Roeters teaches various professional and theoretical courses in the field of adhesive dentistry.
