Dr P. Baas (1958) has been appointed professor by special appointment of Thoracic Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA). The chair was designated on behalf of the Netherlands Cancer Institute-Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AVL).
Paul Baas focuses his attention as a tutor and head of the NKI-AVL’s Department of Thoracic Oncology on the development of new therapies and the treatment of lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma. As part of the collaboration with the AMC, Baas is trying to optimize patients’ referral between the institutes to ensure that diagnostic procedures and therapies can be conducted at the highest level. He considers it a great opportunity to guide motivated, young pulmonary residents and to transfer the latest developments in lung cancer. Moreover, Baas is engaged in the development of translational research and the supervision of doctoral students.
Baas has been working since 1990 as a thoracic oncologist at the NKI-AVL. Before that he worked at the VU University Amsterdam. Baas is vice-president of the European Thoracic Oncology Platform, an initiative to perform high quality clinical studies at a European level. Previously, he was chairman of the Lung Cancer Cooperative Group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer. Baas is associate editor of the journals Clinical Lung Cancer, Lung Cancer and Respirology. He has published many articles in journals such as Annals of Oncology, Chest, European Journal of Cancer, European Respirology Journal and Thorax.
