Dr C.T.J. Hulshof (1953) has been named Professor by Special Appointment of Occupational Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA). The chair was designated on behalf of the Netherlands Society of Occupational Medicine (NVAB).

As Professor by Special Appointment, Carel Hulshof will work to enhance the scientific base of occupational medicine as a profession and to translate findings from scientific research for use in day-to-day occupational health practice. In particular, his research will examine the factors that promote or impede the implementation of guidelines and innovations, and investigate ways to improve the field’s knowledge infrastructure. Where teaching is concerned, Hulshof is particularly interested in optimising the relevance of occupational medicine curricula taught at university medical centres, and promoting the significance of employment and employment conditions as key determinants of health.

Hulshof has worked part-time at the AMC-UvA Coronel Institute of Occupational Health since 1983, where he was named associate professor in 2005. His teaching and research activities have focused on the prevention of adverse health effects of occupational exposure to vibrations, on evaluation research in the occupational healthcare sector, applications of evidence-based medicine and evidence-based guidelines in occupational health practice, and on improving the knowledge infrastructure in his field. From 1979 until 1999, Hulshof also worked as an occupational physician for the Occupational Health Service ArboUnie (and its predecessors) in Nijmegen and Amsterdam, and from 1999 until 2004 he was a project leader at the Foundation for the Advancement of Occupational Healthcare Quality (Stichting Kwaliteitsbevordering Bedrijfsgezondheidszorg, or SKB). Since 2004 Hulshof has also been programme coordinator of guidelines at the NVAB’s Centre of Excellence.

Hulshof holds many national and international board and advisory positions. He is chair of the Scientific Committee on Health Services Research and Evaluation in Occupational Health (part of the International Commission on Occupational Health, or ICOH), a member of the editorial board of the Cochrane Occupational Safety and Health review group and a member of the Guidelines International Network (GIN).
