A minor explores a theme in more detail. This allows you to focus on and gain new knowledge about a new discipline or explore a particular professional field. Also, some minors give access to particular Master's degrees. See the list of all minors.
Tip! You should also consider a second or third choice in case the minor has strict entry requirements or a limited number of places. This will increase your chances of being admitted.
If you have already completed courses from a minor and would like to reapply to take the remaining courses, please contact the Education Desk of the faculty offering the minor. On the student website, use the programme filter to select a programme from that faculty to find the correct contact details. Make sure you arrange your re-enrolment in time (see Step 6).
For each minor, you will find information on the entry requirements, the number of places available, the documents you need to submit, and a link to the Course Catalogue for more information on the courses.
You can apply for a UvA minor in the second semester of the academic year 2026-2027 between 14 October, 10:00 and 10 November, 13:00. Submit your application via the application form. To apply, you need an active UvA account (see Step 4). It is no longer possible to apply for a UvA minor in the first semester.
Only a limited amount of minors are open for application in the second semester. Please visit our minor website to see which minors you can apply for.
Note: a different application period and procedure applies to the Education minor.
Not every minor can be included on your degree certificate. For example, overlap between the minor of your choice and your own Bachelor's degree is usually not allowed. Find your Bachelor’s degree in the approval matrix to see which minors you are allowed to include on your degree certificate, which you are not and for which minors you need to submit a request to your Examinations Board.
Looking for information about the permission matrix for the 2025-2026 academic year? You can consult it at the bottom of this page.

Enrolled in a minor in the first semester of 2026-2027? Make sure to re-enrol for your Bachelor’s programme.
You can arrange your re-enrolment in Studielink from 11 May until 31 August 2026. Arrange your re-enrolment in Studielink before 8 June to avoid delays to your course registration due to processing time.
Note: this does not apply to applications for minors in the second semester.
After you are admitted to the minor, you are guaranteed placement in compulsory minor courses and guaranteed placement in sufficient electives. You are only guaranteed placement if you have arranged your re-enrolment in Studielink on time and register for the course during the course registration period. The guarantee does not apply if you try to register for the course during the post-registration period or late course registration period.
From 20th November, you may receive a message regarding placement/rejection.
