Are you deciding on a study or university and have a disability or chronic illness? Then it is important to know what to expect and what support is available. At the University of Amsterdam (UvA), we work with you to find what you need to study successfully.

You and your studies

Everyone’s experience is different. You may have a disability, chronic illness or be neurodivergent. The UvA focuses on your abilities and will work with you to help you complete your studies as effectively as possible.

Secondary school adjustment

Adjustments granted at secondary school do not automatically apply at university. Be sure to request adjustments as soon as you know you will be studying at the UvA.

Bachelor's to Master’s adjustment

The basic adjustments you could make use of during your UvA Bachelor’s programme will automatically also be granted during your UvA Master’s programme. This does not apply to individual adjustments. Therefore, make sure to apply for an individual adjustment as soon as you know that you will be doing your Master’s programme at the UvA.

Personal advice and support

You can speak to a study adviser for questions about study planning, study pace or combining your studies with health needs. In a confidential meeting, you can discuss what you need to make your studies manageable.

Adjustments for examinations and teaching and learning

Depending on your situation, adjustments may include:

  • Extra time for examinations
  • Examinations in a quieter environment
  • Assistive software or aids

Apply for these adjustments in advance to ensure they are in place when you begin your studies.

Accessible study environment

The UvA is continuously working on improving the accessibility of its buildings and digital learning environments. This includes wheelchair access, adapted study areas and digital tools to support learning.

Connecting with other students

Would you like to share experiences with fellow students? Through networks for students with disabilities (such as UvA IDEAs), you can connect with others facing similar challenges.

What can you do now?

  • Start early – Consider your support needs when choosing your study programme
  • Ask questions – Contact a student counsellor or study adviser to discuss your situation
  • Plan ahead – Some adjustments take time to arrange, so starting early helps
