What sort of rooms are available at UvA student housing?
There are three room types available:
- Shared bedroom with shared facilities
- Private bedroom with shared facilities
- Private bedroom with private facilities (some are suitable for couples)
Rooms within a room type may be different, but the basics of the rooms remain the same. All of our rooms have basic furnishing.
How do I indicate which room type I want?
Room types are linked to four monthly rent budget categories. When filling in the housing application form you need to enter a budget category. Before you choose a budget category, inform yourself about the costs of UvA student housing.
Please note:
- The listed rental rates are prices per calendar month including electricity, water, gas and internet.
- It is only possible to enter 1 budget category in your application.
- Your choice of budget category has no influence on your chances of receiving a room offer.
- Choosing a higher budget category will not increase your chances of receiving a room offer. Just choose the budget you can afford.
- Unfortunately, you cannot choose a specific room type within a budget category, as this depends on availability.
- There is limited availability in each budget category, especially in category 1 and 2. We will try to match as many students as possible with their preferred budget and we will try not to offer students a room above their maximum budget category. Keep in mind that rooms in category 1 and 2 may run out.
What type of room can I expect in each budget category?
Room types | Private bedroom | Private facilities | Budget category |
Shared room | No | No | 1 |
Private room with shared facilities | Yes | No | 1, 2, 3 |
Private room | Yes | Yes | 3, 4 |
Couples room | Yes | Yes* | 4 |
* Some have shared facilities
- Budget category 1: < €410 per month. Shared rooms or small private rooms with shared facilities. Shared rooms are suitable to share with a friend.
- Budget category 2: €410 - €500 per month. Small private rooms with shared facilities.
- Budget category 3: €500 - €700 per month. Larger private rooms with shared facilities or small private rooms with private facilities.
-
Budget category 4: €700 - €950 per month. Larger private rooms with private facilities, some are suitable for couples.
- In a private room with private facilities you have your own room or studio (container), including your own private kitchen and private bathroom. The more expensive rooms in this category are generally larger than the other rooms, and some have a more decorated and/or contemporary interior, or include sports- or entertainment facilities within or around the building.
- Applying for a private room as a couple: If your partner will also be a UvA/AUAS student, you can apply together. Only one of you needs to fill in the housing application form, choose budget category 4, and apply for a couples room. Please note that it is only possible to apply if you both have a UvA/AUAS student number.
Please note that the budget price ranges above are still subject to change, as the rent prices for the new academic year could still change.
Sharing a room with a friend in UvA housing
If you would like to live in a shared room with a friend, you and your friend must both be eligible for UvA or AUAS housing and both apply separately via our housing form. You are both required to pay the UvA/AUAS housing fee. You can state your wish to share in your application forms. Sharing with a friend is only possible in budget category 1 (shared rooms). The request for a share can unfortunately never be guaranteed. The mentioned rental rate is per person, not per room and you will both receive a separate rental contract.
It is unfortunately not possible to sign up with a friend in the budget categories 2, 3 and 4. If you want to share a flat or apartment together with friends, we advise you to search the private market instead.
Couples room (sharing with your partner) in UvA housing
We have a limited number of couples rooms. If both you and your partner plan to study in Amsterdam and want to live together, you may apply for a couples room. These are studio apartments suitable for couples without accompanying children. The studios have a double bed and private facilities (kitchenette/bathroom). Sometimes you need to share the kitchen and bathroom with other students on the same floor as well.
You both need to be a UvA or AUAS student and you only need one housing application, but you are required to pay the double AUAS housing fee. In your application form, you can request a couples room in budget category 4. The mentioned monthly rates are per room, not per person. The rental contract will be in your name only, but your partner can also register on this address with the municipality. Please note that you will have to fill out a “permission to register at address form” for the person whose name is not on the rental contract. See the arrival website for more details on registration with the municipality.
We have a very limited number of couples rooms. If we run out of couples rooms, we will contact you for an alternative. We strongly recommend though to also search for housing on the private market at the same time as your UvA housing application.

What are the UvA student housing locations?
The UvA does not have a big campus where all the rooms are located, but we have over 20 different off-campus buildings throughout the whole city. The student housing buildings are mostly situated in residential neighborhoods.
It is not possible to request a specific location. All students are assigned randomly to rooms within their budget category. Location and budget category are not linked. Student housing in a higher budget category is not more conveniently located than that in a lower budget category.
The maximum travel time from the housing locations to the UvA’s campuses is for Dutch standards relatively low: about 45 minutes. Most locals travel by bike or public transport. Check the 9292 route planner (for public transport) or Google Maps to find your way in Amsterdam. If you would like to learn more about the different areas check our page on different neighborhoods in Amsterdam.

Who's going to be the housing provider that sends me a housing offer?
UvA international student housing has partnerships with multiple housing providers:
- Lieven de Key
- DUWO
- StuNest - Spartaan
- Student Experience - Amsterdam NDSM and Minervahaven
- OurCampus Amsterdam Diemen
- The Social Hub Amsterdam West
The rooms are owned and managed by the housing providers but reserved by the UvA for our international students. UvA housing will forward your information to one of the housing providers, and they will send you the room offer. The UvA also uses the platform ROOM.nl for students to book their rooms.
Resident Assistants & caretakers in UvA housing
Resident Assistants (RA’s) are Dutch and English speaking students who live together with international students in a number of buildings of our housing providers. They can help with all kinds of questions about the building, your room or Amsterdam in general. Also, the RA’s often organise social outings and activities. If you have any questions regarding RA's, you can contact ra-coordinator-sts@uva.nl. Check the building information of your housing provider for contact details and consulting hours.
Most buildings also have a designated caretaker who will take care of maintenance issues and repair requests.
