Prof. dr. Christian Burgers is a Full Professor in Communication and Organisations in the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). Between 2019 and 2024, he was also a Professor by special appointment in Strategic Communication (Logeion Chair) at the same university. He is also Programme Group leader of the Communication, Organisations and Society (COS) group. He also leads the Department of Communication's Initiative on dealing with misinformation in times of crisis.
Between 2009 and 2021, he worked in the Department of Communication Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In 2010, he defended his PhD dissertation in the field of Communication and Information Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen. In 2016, he was a visiting scholar at the Department of Communication Studies at Chapman University (Orange, CA, USA).
His research focuses on communication and organisations, with a specific emphasis on misinformation, bias, and (figurative) framing. Between 2014-2018, he worked on the project “Figurative Framing” (2014-2018), for which he received a VENI grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Between 2018 and 2025, he worked on the project "Contemporary Political Satire" for which he received a VIDI grant from NWO. He currently works on the projects "When lies take root" (PI, funded by an NWO Open Competition M grant; 2026-2030), AuthentiMark (Co-PI together with prof. dr. Jessica Piotrowski and prof. dr. Guda van Noort; funded by an NWO/KIC grant 2026-2031), and DeMoCraft (WP leader; PI: prof. dr. Leonie Heres at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; funded by an NWO/ORC grant, 2026-2033).
Prof. dr. Christian Burgers is the main editor of the book series Metaphor in Language, Cognition and Communication (MiLCC), published by John Benjamins.
