  • About Charissa Leiwakabessy

I am a second-year PhD researcher at the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam.

Currently, my research is an integral part of the major NWO project Just Prepare, which aims to achieve a just energy transition in Underprivileged Neighbourhoods (UNs) across the Netherlands. The focus of this project lies in addressing two crucial mismatches that hinder the energy transition in UNs: first, the discrepancy between retrofit technologies and residents' energy practices, and second, the divide between residents and the stakeholders involved in planning and executing energy solutions. These challenges not only affect the effectiveness of the energy transition, leading to resistance, rebound, and prebound effects, but also raise concerns about justice, encompassing the equitable distribution of benefits and burdens, access to decision-making processes, and the recognition of vulnerable groups impacted by the transition.

My research is centred around the second mismatch, specifically exploring questions of energy justice, with a particular emphasis on recognition justice. I am deeply intrigued by the empirical manifestations of misrecognition and how recognition, as a form of justice and as a transformative instrument, can be harnessed to co-design interventions in public policy processes. I am interested in how such interventions can critically engage with and address underlying issues that may foster misrecognition and subsequently hinder a just energy transition.

Beyond my focus on energy justice, my research interests extend to various areas, including system transition theory, policy analysis and design, contemporary political philosophy, and studies related to decoloniality and feminism, particularly concerning the energy transition.

I earned my MSc in Political Science (2021) from the VU University of Amsterdam with the distinction of cum laude. I also contributed as a junior researcher (2021-2022) at the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, working on a compelling project that delved into the voting behaviour of citizens with a migration background in Amsterdam.

I am genuinely passionate about exploring innovative solutions for a just energy transition and committed to advancing our understanding of energy justice and its role in shaping effective public policies.
