  • Profile

Yara F. Mijnhout is a PhD candidate in Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research. Her PhD project is part of an international and interdisciplinary research team that develops new theorization and empirical insights on political corruption. Within this framework, she examines how corruption is socially constructed, with a particular focus on the role of the media. The project pursues three main objectives:

    • Mapping discursive networks of actors who shape the social construction of corruption across European, national, and regional public spheres, with a focus on traditional media.
    • Testing how exposure to media reporting on corruption and related concepts (e.g., bribery, embezzlement, lobbying) influences citizens’ problem awareness, attribution of responsibility, political participation, and support for anti-corruption policies.
    • Advancing understanding of journalistic accountability by studying how investigative journalism and evolving journalistic practices contribute to uncovering transnational corruption and illicit financial flows.
