Dimitrina, Political Science student

Hi there! I’m Dimitrina, and I’m in my first year studying Political Science. Originally from Bulgaria, I always knew I wanted to pursue my dreams internationally. When I was looking at different universities, I aimed for a place where I could really learn and be challenged. UVA offered all that and more, so applying there was the first step in my amazing journey in Amsterdam.

Politics is everywhere

In our Political Science programme, we hear “Politics is everywhere” so much that I almost expect to bump into politics around every corner. It’s the first thing we learn, and the more we study, the more we see its importance. What I really like about the course is how it covers all aspects of politics - from its philosophical roots and its connections to economics, to how it affects governance, international relations, law, and human rights.

Exploring opportunities

In the first year, we get to learn about different topics and perspectives, and in the second year, we can choose which area to specialise in. I’m super excited about the third year because we can either study abroad, do a minor, or an internship.

A motivating environment

If you’re thinking about applying, you should know that the workload can be challenging sometimes and you will be reading, writing, and researching a lot. But what makes it easier and fun are the other motivated students who become your friends, the great lecturers, tutors, and advisors, and the social events organised by the study association Machiavelli. And where better to study politics than in Amsterdam, a city so welcoming to diversity, innovation, and cooperation, and at UVA, a university so focused on internationalism and research?

My advice to anyone considering this study at the UvA is to take the leap and be courageous, because the opportunities are there for those who want to learn, grow, and understand the world of politics.
