In this course, we delve deeply into the meaning of democracy's core values: equality and freedom for all. How do we reconcile these ideals with the realities of our society, where various forms of exclusion persist, such as ethnic profiling, violence against the LGBTQ+ community, discrimination against the Roma/Sinti community, or online misogyny targeting female politicians?

This course is a collaborative journey of mutual learning. Together, students and teachers bridge theory with reality, leveraging their diverse perspectives, academic expertise, and newfound insights. Students gain profound insights into democratic principles and develop the skills necessary for engaging in respectful dialogue, actively listening to and honoring diverse perspectives. The objective of this course is to aid students in enhancing their critical thinking abilities, enabling them to initiate meaningful discussions on complex societal issues related to inequality.

Throughout the course, students actively reflect on and discuss the assigned reading materials, participate in in-class practical assignments, and maintain reflection logbooks. Additionally, each student individually explores the challenges faced by marginalized groups within our society through a thought-provoking essay. As the culmination of our collective efforts, we will craft a manifesto that embodies our shared commitment to creating a more equal and just society.

All lectures will take place on-campus and we assume you can be physically present during the scheduled hours. You can find the timetable on Datanose.

Registration

Registration is possible students participating in an Honours programme. The registration for the Honours courses will start on June 5, 10 am -  June 11, 11.59 pm. You can register through the online registration form that will appear on Honoursmodules IIS. (registration is NOT through SIS)

Please note: There is no guarantee for placement if you register after June 11, so make sure you register on time. You will hear which course(s) you are registered for before June 30.
