‘What I really liked about this LLM Programme is that it offers you the unique chance to study the subject of International Criminal Law in two cities. These cities are directly related to the field: New York and Amsterdam. This advantage influences the whole spirit of the programme by means of the academics and practitioners that are involved in teaching, the internship opportunities and study visits and finally, hopefully, also the future career prospects.

The atmosphere is supported by the very small and diverse group of students and professors. This programme is ideal for students who know that they want to be engaged in the field of International Criminal Law and have a general background in this area.’

‘While there is a focus on theory, you have ample opportunity to apply it to real case scenarios. I was keen to participate in a number of courses with a more practical orientation such as the Amsterdam International Law Clinic, the ICC Moot Court, International Criminal Justice Practicum as well as getting involved with the works of the War Reparations Centre. The Law Lab is also extremely interesting; it provides an atmosphere in which students get accustomed to discussing pressing general issues of International Criminal Justice with experts in the field. During my studies here in the Netherlands I was offered an opportunity to intern at an international law firm specialised in, amongst others, international criminal law; this continues to be a very enriching opportunity.

The programme has equipped me with not only the appropriate academic skills but also with essential communication and social skills. The course focuses on training lawyers holistically, taking stock of the psychological and mental preparation that goes into assessing a case and dealing with evidence of the worst kind such as forensic photos, etc.’
