Why did your choose this programme?

"After concluding my BSc studies in Italy, I was searching for a programme that could challenge me from a coding and data analysis perspective, ideally applied to fascinating physical questions. Considering my passion for Astronomy, and the strong role of data science in tackling astrophysical questions, I naturally ended up applying for a MSc program in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A).” 

Why did you choose the University of Amsterdam?

"While considering many international departments, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Anton Pannekoek Institute (API) stood out in several ways. What particularly fascinated me at the time was the chance to join a research group for a whole year during the second part of the MSc program. I felt this would allow me to deepen my knowledge and skills, while experiencing what it is like to be part of a real research team. This, combined with the international nature of the department and the vibrant environment of Amsterdam, led me to an easy choice once my request to join the MSc program was accepted.” 

How much freedom did you have when selecting courses or projects?

"My experience in the institute matched and went beyond the expectations. During the first year I had a lot of freedom in course selection, to tailor the curriculum to match my interests and help me develop the skills most relevant for the career path I wanted to follow. The courses were well-balanced between theoretical and practical content, and they offered frequent opportunities for productive collaboration with fellow MSc students. 

During the second year, I had the invaluable opportunity to join a research group and closely collaborate with experts in Astronomy and Data Science/AI. Probably the collaboration with these experts has been the most insightful experience of this programme. I had the chance to live in a welcoming, friendly and international environment, while learning about the most advanced challenges in the field. During the project, I worked on improving the detection techniques in the field of Radio Astronomy. In particular, I focused on developing AI and Machine Learning based algorithms with the aim of not missing very fast and energetic radio pulses, which are called Fast Radio Bursts.” 

How did the programme prepare you for your future?

"These very positive experiences from my MSc in A&A changed my perspective about my future and I ended up applying (and being selected) for a PhD in A&A.  Now, I use the skills I learned every day during my MSc at API, which thoroughly prepared me in tackling the interesting scientific challenges of my PhD project.” 

What advice would you give to someone considering this Master’s programme?

"To summarise, the programme is an excellent choice for anyone interested in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The programme offers academic flexibility, strong research experience, and an international, welcoming environment. Whether aiming for a PhD or a role in industry, you will gain valuable analytical and problem-solving skills that will serve you well in any future path.”
