After successfully finishing the minor Economics: Transition Minor (60 EC) you have acquired a thorough knowledge on the main theories and applications in the field of Economics. This knowledge allows you to understand and evaluate current developments in the (world) economy. You can use this knowledge to participate in and contribute to policy discussions.

Progressing to a Master's programme

This minor gives you direct access to the Master’s programme in Economics or Business Economics.

Transition to the MSc Business Economics

The minor allows you to enrol in the Master’s programme in Business Economics.

Programme

You need at least one academic year to complete this minor and the programme consists of 60 EC. To finish this minor, you have to follow 8 compulsory courses and supplement these with 12 EC in restricted-choice electives.

Entry requirements

  • When applying for the minor, it is necessary to have successfully completed your first year (60 EC).
  • This minor is not open for students of a University of Applied Science (HBO).
  • This minor is open for students from the BSc Business Administration of Economics and Business. Instead of the course "Principles of Economics", they have to take an additional restricted-choice elective. Please inform us of your choice in your application. 
  • This minor is not open for other programmes of Economics and Business.

Required prior knowledge

  • Other required prior knowledge: you are expected to possess sufficient quantitative knowledge. The minor Economics: Transition Minor (60 EC) is a difficult programme.

    This means that students are assumed to have previously studied mathematics at the vwo level A or B. Students are strongly advised to take a Summer School in Mathematics if the aforementioned knowledge is not present or if they would feel more secure after brushing up their knowledge in this field.

    Statistics 1 for Economics provides an excellent basis for self-study should deficiencies exist with respect to the knowledge of statistics.

Application and Admission

Important Dates and selection process

  • Unfortunately you can no longer apply for this minor, as the application period has closed. The application period for a minor for the academic year 2025-2026 will start in April 2025.

Selection for this minor is based on the first come first serve principle.

Please note that you can only be admitted to one minor at UvA Economics and Business at a time. However, you can apply for a maximum of two minors. A potential second choice will only be taken into consideration if you are not selected for the minor you applied for first.  

What do you need to apply?

Non UvA-students

  • Sign up as an elective student (bijvak student) for the Bachelor's programme in Economics and Business Economics in Studielink with a start date of 1 September 2024. Important: You need a timely enrolment and an active UvA-account, to access the application form. It is advised to arrange this before 25 April.
  • a signed and stamped transcript of your study results so far;
  • Motivation letter.

After admission: register for courses

After being admitted to the minor, you need to register for the individual courses of the minor. The course registration period for the first semester will take place on the following dates:

  • 25 June until 1 July 13:00;

All information about course registration will be included in the email you receive after you are admitted to the minor. All minor students have a guaranteed spot for a course.
