Turkish is also a typologically different language than many European languages. It is the official language of Turkey, but there are around 80 million Turkish speakers worldwide. So if you are interested in studying languages, learning this language will expand your understanding of language in general.

The minor Turkish at the UvA includes 24 EC worth of language proficiency courses, plus an overarching course ‘The World in Languages’, which you will follow with students from a different field of study than language. Together with these non-language students, you will learn to place Turkish and the other languages of the world in a broader linguistic perspective.

Upon completion of the minor Turkish, your command of the Turkish Language will have reached level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR ). You will be able to reflect on the Turkish language in an academic manner.

The UvA minor Turkish is open for absolute beginners, but doing a language minor takes a considerable amount of effort. Besides attending the intensive lectures, you will also spend ample time on self-study and on the preparation of tests related to vocabulary, listening skills and grammar, even if you have prior knowledge of the language.
