Child Development and Education

The Research Master's in Child Development and Education is an intensive, selective two-year programme that trains students to become researchers in the field of parenting, education and child development.

Why study Child Development and Education at the University of Amsterdam?

  • You will follow courses in the field of child development and/or education, while at the same time improving your statistical skills and acquiring research practice.
  • You will study in a highly interactive setting, with lots of personal attention and feedback.
  • You can design your own personal programme, following your research interests.
  • In learning to develop your research skills at the Department of Child Development and Education, you may benefit from the department's extensive experimental research facilities, among which video-monitored observation rooms, a baby lab and an ERP research lab equipped with facilities for taking electro-physiological measurements.
  • You may also participate in observational and interventional research in families or classrooms, in large-scale skills-testing research on children and adults, or in conducting educational surveys using questionnaires for different target groups.

Who can apply for the Research Master’s programme?

The Research master’s programme is accessible for students with a bachelor's degree in pedagogical sciences or in educational sciences, but is also for students with a bachelor's degree in an adjacent study (e.g., psychology, sociology) who want to specialize in research in child development and education.

Career prospects

Following successful completion of the programme, you are qualified to apply for an existing PhD project or to create your own PhD project by submitting a PhD project proposal and applying for a research grant.
