There are several ways to obtain a PhD position. You can apply for a vacancy or submit an open application.

Option 1: Apply for a vacancy

If you are selected, you will be employed by the UvA and receive a salary. View the UvA vacancy overview.

Option 2: Submit an open application to a research school or supervisor

If your application is successful, you may in some cases be employed by the UvA. In other cases, you may not receive funding from the UvA. In such cases you will need to arrange your own finances through, for example, a subsidy, grant, or other employer.

Preparing your application

To apply for a PhD position, you need to write a motivation letter. You should also include several attachments:

  • A detailed CV. Include months (not just years) when referring to your studies and work experience.
  • A list of publications, if applicable (maximum one A4 page).
  • The names and email addresses of two academic referees. Indicate your relationship to each referee. Your referees should be able to comment on how your academic profile aligns with the specific PhD position.
  • Transcripts from your Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.
  • Academic work that you have written yourself, such as your Master’s thesis or a scholarly article. You may also provide a link to a research project that is available online.
