Hobbes and the State

Since 2008 Quentin Skinner has been the Barber Beaumont Professor of the Humanities at Queen Mary, University of London. He began by studying and teaching at the University of Cambridge, after which he spent several years at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.
He is a Fellow of the British Academy, The American Academy, the Academia Europaea and the Accademia dei Lincei, and has been the recipient of honorary degrees from many major Universities, including Athens, Chicago, Harvard, Helsinki, Oslo and Oxford.
Professor Skinner’s scholarship, which is available in 25 languages, has won him many prizes, including the Isaiah Berlin Prize, the Lippincott and David Easton Awards of the American Political Science Association, the Wolfson Prize for History, the Bielefeld Wissenschaftspreis and a Balzan Prize.
The Spinoza Chair was established in 1995 by the then Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Amsterdam. Since 1996 publishing house Van Gorcum publishes the Spinoza Lectures, which are given by high-profile thinkers of our time.
