Women in the Faculty of Science - Student Chapter (WiF Students) serves the interests off emale STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students at the University of Amsterdam. The organization was found in May 2020 by five UvA students from different STEM study programs, among which are Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Biomedical Sciences. WiF-Students is an extension of the WiF, an organization inside the Faculty of Science for female scientists.
The position of men and women in the academic field is still uneven. Women are underrepresented in many study programmes and academic functions at the Faculty of Science. Amongst other things, WiF Students wants to close the gender gap by mapping why women choose STEM study programs and pursue academis careers less often than men.
WiF Students organizes lectures, brainstorm sessions, and other activities. Click here to leave your email address, as to receive updates about future activities. You can also stay up to date via these channels:
You do not need to be female to participate in WiF Students activities. Everyone interested in gender equality within STEM study programs is welcome!
To introduce everyone to WiF Students, a first event is planned via Zoom on 17 June. Felienne Hermans, associate professor at Leiden University, will give a short lecture. In which she talks about the status of women in science and about her own mission to teach as many people to program as possible. Questions can be asked to Felienne, the board of WiF Students and members of the WiF.
