Good lecturers are at the heart of good education. Lecturers enthuse and inspire students. To put the lecturer in the spotlight, the students of the Central Student Council and ASVA Student Union organise the annual UvA Lecturer of the Year award. Erik Bekkers was nominated by students and employees of the Faculty of Science.

Dr Erik Bekkers teaches Geometric Deep Learning in the Machine Learning Lab at the UvA. According to students, he is a talented lecturer who knows an awful lot about his field. He knows how to clearly convey this to his students in his well-prepared and structured lectures. He communicates well with his students and they can always come to him with questions. In addition, his clear explanatory videos on YouTube are a fantastic addition of high quality, which is inspiring for online education.

About UvA Lecturer of the Year

For every faculty, a faculty lecturer of the year is named. After collecting all nominations, the nominations per lecturer was corrected for program size of the lecturer, to ensure that study programs of large and small size have an equal chance for this title. The lecturer with the most (adjusted) number of nominations is named faculty Lecturer of the Year.

The Lecturers of the Year per faculty will continue for the title of UvA Lecturer of the Year. The UvA Lecturer of the Year is chosen by a jury. The jury consists of students from the Central Student Council and ASVA Student Union, the rector magnificus and a former UvA Lecturer of the Year. For the organisation the Central Student Council and ASVA Student Union are  supported by staff from the UvA Teaching & Learning Centre (TLC) and Academic Affairs (AcZ).

Dr. Jan Aten of the Faculty of Medicine has been elected UvA Lecturer of the Year 2022.
